PRSA Involvement (past and present):

I joined PRSA just three years ago. I wish I would have joined sooner because in the short time I have been a member, it has been so beneficial to me personally and professionally. This year, I served as the chairperson for Professional Development Day, Media Roundtable and the Annual Awards Program.

1)    Tell us a little bit about your career, educational/professional background and how you got to where you are today?

I graduated with a degree in marketing from Valdosta State University which is in GA and shortly after moved to Florida to search for a marketing job!  I worked heavily in marketing and promotions for around six years, but throughout my different positions PR was always a part of it. I learned through my various employers more and more about PR until I eventually started working at the Museum of Science & Industry in 2010 and strictly had a PR and Media Relations position. I truly never knew how much I enjoyed PR until this position and it was at that time I focused on expanding my career in the field of Public Relations by joining organizations such as PRSA. Currently, I am employed at Grow Financial Federal Credit Union and am responsible for all of the internal and external communications. I love my job and have never been happier!

2)    What do you wish someone had told you when you first started your career in PR?

That it’s not just writing press releases. PR is so much more – it’s media relations, communications, social media and much more on a daily basis! Also, you learn so much from gaining different work experiences. Every environment is different with different people and cultures so it’s worth exploring.  Do not be afraid of the unknown or to change jobs if and when necessary.

3)    What do you love most about working as a PR professional?

I love connecting with the media and seeing my work come to life. It’s one of the best feelings in the world when I have worked hard on a pitch to the media and it pays off as a great story. I also think in order to do your job well as a PR professional, you have to be able to make a special connection with the people you work with in the media. I have really enjoyed getting to know a lot of them very well over the past few years.

4)    Do you think it takes a certain kind of personality to thrive in PR? What traits are most important?

Yes, I definitely do. PR is a 24/7 world and it takes a certain personality to thrive in that type of environment. Some of the traits I feel are most important are flexibility, strong organizational skills, being a strategic thinker, determination and most importantly, you must have thick skin to work in this field. You may get shot down a hundred times before you get the one story you are looking for…so do not take things personally!

5)    What’re some of your personal hobbies outside of work/PR?

I have been married for 10 years and have two beautiful children, a girl and a boy – ages 5 and 2.  We live in Riverview and enjoy going to the beach, relaxing by the pool and enjoying some wine on the weekends!
